The electronic cigarette originated in China in 2004 by a company called Ruyan. The first version looked rather like a normal cigarette in a cigarette holder. It has a lithium-ion battery, which forms the main body of the cigarette. When the device is ’smoked’, an airflow sensor sends a signal to a microprocessor which turns on the atomizer. The atomizer turns some of the contents of the cartridge into vapor, that the user breathes. At the same time an LED turns on on the end of the cigarette, giving the impression of a glowing tip. There is no way of turning the device on or off as it turns itself off when you stop inhaling.
